The Tybee Island Strand Cottages Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and includes 18 cottages and walkways dating back to the early 1900s. Built-in 1925 and nestled among palm trees and majestic oaks, Twelve Palms Cottage is one of the original Strand cottages. Constructed on raised brick piers Twelve Palms Cottage features a hipped roof, hardwood floors, 10’ ceilings, a clawfoot tub, tongue-and-groove walls and ceilings, and a stunning large wrap-around screen porch with room and seating for reading, visiting, and dining - all while enjoying the Tybee breeze.

Purchased by new owners in March of 2022, the property has undergone major renovations under the supervision of acclaimed designer and preservationist Jane Coslick. Jane’s touch can be seen throughout the home from her soothing white color palette infused with pops of pink and citron to her selection of fun and eclectic handcrafted Stray Dog lighting. Enjoy the newly restored original tongue-and-groove walls and ceiling, fresh paint, six new custom-built beds, new mattresses, new TVs, new flooring in the kitchen and downstairs, new furniture, and a new HVAC system. Off-street parking for four regular-sized autos [2 x 2 stacked] and plenty of outdoor space for entertaining.

Located on the prized “Beachside of Butler” with partial ocean views Twelve Palms Cottage is the third house from the beach with an easy stroll over the boardwalk to the ocean, two blocks from downtown and one block from the grocery store. The living/dining room features plenty of seating including overstuffed matching sofas and club chairs, a dining table for 8, and a 55” smart TV. There are five bedrooms each with its own smart TV and ample linens. Three of the bedrooms are on the main floor along with the living/dining room, kitchen, and wrap-around porch. Bedroom 1 features a king bed with ocean views and a private bathroom. Bedrooms 2 and 3 feature queen beds, each with their own private access to the wrap-around porch and share a jack-in-jill bathroom. Bedrooms 4 and 5 are located along the downstairs open-air hallway which is accessed from screen porch stairs just outside the kitchen. Bedroom 4 has two queen beds, and the adjoining Bedroom 5 has three twin beds. Across the open-air hallway are two classic Tybee Island open-air showers, each with its own changing room and sink plus a shared lavatory. A washer and dryer are also found on the ground floor. This charming vintage beach house is the perfect home away from home for your friends and family.

Paradise Found

When we decided to sell the house in 2022, I made a list of the attributes our dream buyers would hold. These included: being a Savannah family; having an understanding of the importance of historic preservation; having the energy and artistic creativity to continue and improve upon the updates we had been making; and of course being a lot of fun. The new owners check all of these boxes and more, beyond anything I could have imagined. In February, 2023, one year after the sale, I had the good fortune of spending two weeks in Twelve Palms Cottage and was astounded not only by the amount of work that had been done in just one year but more importantly by the attention to detail and beauty that was infused into every room. The newly outfitted porch, which wraps around three sides of the house and has an ocean view, has always been my favorite place to spend time, smell the salt air, and at night, when things quiet down, hear the waves crashing in the nearby ocean. Look around Tybee and you won’t find many of these porches, originally built to shade the rooms from the sun, catch the breeze, and send cooling air throughout the house. You can still benefit from this design by opening all the doors and allowing the house to work as it was meant to before the days of air conditioning. I have spent time here in a variety of ways, from alone to having every bed filled with friends and family, and the house easily adapts to any number of occupants. The downstairs has always been the domain of the young (and young at heart) and now has the added advantage of being steps from the new pool. If you are looking for the perfect place to spend your next Tybee vacation, you have found it in Twelve Palms Cottage.

Just the best

We just returned from a week at Twelve Palms. The house was so comfortable and creatively decorated. We discovered surprising and delightful details right up to the day we left. The kitchen was well equipped and there are also abundant towels. The wrap around porch is just delightful and now there is a private pool! We all enjoyed the porch and the pool so much. The house is very close to the beach and easy to access down a boardwalk. The check in and check out is easy and the staff was so helpful on arrival. I cannot recommend this house enough.

A Magical Relaxing Stay

I booked 12 Palms for 4 evenings and 5 days. I wish that I could have stayed longer! 12 Palms is a magical beach home with a fantastic porch that has a breeze that never stops. The living room is warm and inviting and filled with beautiful pops of color that gives it the true Tybee welcome. The beds are very comfortable and the design of the house lends itself to privacy as well. I found the street itself to be filled with very friendly, locals and renters, with a very short walk down to the beach. I grew up in Savannah and also Tybee in the summers living next door to the Chu family of Tybee Island and I will definitely re-book 12 palms as my beach house from my younger years. The location of the home is very convenient with a quick walk down to the main drag and the supermarket as well. You will leave with a relaxing Tybee vibe!
